COMPOSTING TOILETS
Developed a slide show and presentation on The Operation of
the Composting Toilet. The presentation includes a detailed
explanation of the composting process and how it relates to effective
design. The efficiencies of the most popular designs are compared
based on sanitation, cost and convenience. The presentation won
the 1988 Western Canadian Engineering Competition and took 3rd
place in the Canadian
Engineering Competition in the explanatory communications
category.
BIOSOLIDS LAND
APPLICATION PROGRAMS
Designed, coordinated and managed contracts for biosolids composting,
trucking, spreading, sampling, monitoring, and data management.
Determined suitable locations for land applications of biosolids
in the Lower Fraser Valley and Princeton Area. Created partnerships
with landowners and obtained permits from municipal, provincial
and federal government agencies. Beneficially recycled hundreds
of tonnes of GVRD
biosolids.
WASTEWATER TREATMENT PLANTS
Managed and executed process audits and evaluations of enhanced
treatment options for the Lions Gate and Iona Island Wastewater treatment
plants in Vancouver. Collated historical, analytical and operations
data. Assisted with the design and implementation of stress tests
to determine capacity. Coordinated consultants, plant operators,
management and lab staff. Virtually all of the recommendations
of the audit were implemented.
FORCEMAIN INSTALLATION
Carried out field inspection services for the installation and
testing of 900 meters of 42" steel forcemain along Vernon
Drive in Vancouver. Coordinated/managed various inspectors and
compaction testing, inspected welding and corrosion protection,
surveyed elevation and alignment conformance and ensured conformance
with WCB and OH&S requirements for the work.
SLOPE STABILIZATION
Wrote specifications and managed the contract for construction
of an access road, and the drilling and installation of horizontal
drains into Ingersoll Ravine in Port Moody. The project required
public, municipal and environmental approvals, supervision of
geo-technical and environmental consultants, placement of over
2,000 cubic meters of rock, access road decommissioning and re-vegetation.
HIGHWAY LANDSCAPING
Made use of 2,000 tonnes of dewatered primary sewage sludge to
produce a growing medium for landscaping along the Barnet Highway
in Burnaby and Port Moody. This project was a first of its kind
in Canada. The work included,
Designing and implementing
a public and stakeholder consultation process and addressing
their concerns.
Conducting and presenting
the results of literature reviews.
Facilitating contact with
various experts.
Obtaining approvals from
all stakeholders and government agencies.
Preparing, awarding and managing contracts for trucking operations
and the manufacture and testing of the growing medium.
Conducting inspections, sampling, monitoring, data management
and reporting.
RENOVATED A 12" CONCRETE SANITARY SEWER
Managed the contract for the rehabilitation of an old and damaged municipal sanitary sewer in Coquitlam. The work involved specification writing and ensuring contractor conformance with the cured-in-place, jointless, seamless, pipe-within-a-pipe technology, closed circuit camera specifications, etc.
PRELIMINARY ASSESSMENT OF ROUTE OPTIONS FOR THE NEW 750-1200MM DIA. LAKE CITY INTERCEPTOR IN CENTRAL BURNABY
Identified and assessed route options based on environmental, financial, engineering, geotechnical, social and political considerations. Retained and managed an environmental consultant, coordinated surveying, drafting, collation of utilities information and preparation of presentation materials. Installation of this interceptor included the crossing of Stoney Creek, bridge construction and compensatory downstream fisheries enhancement.
